    1. Miniature nude statue inspires children’s book furor. What do you think of this, kid lit people?
    2. Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! (scream of delight) The new Most Serene Republic CD, Population, comes out on Oct. 2. You can download the song Sherry and her Butterfly Net over at the Arts and Crafts Web site. From the sounds of it, it would appear that my favorite canucks are getting a little more focused. I’m listening to this track over and over and I quite like it — very stirring and emotional.
    3. Anderson Cooper continues to fuck with us.
    4. Natalie Dee does it again.
    5. Iron and Wine covers Radiohead at the Pitchfork Festival. Someone really needs to introduce Mr. And Wine to a pair of shears and some conditioner, stat.
    6. Also, I am trying to get pictures printed and I’m realizing I have no pictures of me and my friends. I guess that when I get a camera in my hand, I am more inclined to shoot bizarre things at artsy angles and less inclined to shoot, you know, people. So, if you have pictures of us (particularly shots where I look hot) send them to me.

I am not at all surprised by #1. I ask for stuff like that all the time from foreign publishers. “Can you please put a bikini top on that one-inch high mermaid?” “Can you make that bottle say fruit juice instead of champagne?” Several reasons for this, and none of them are because we as publishers hate freedom of speech: 1) Ugh: parents. I hate hate hate being berated on the phone by absurd parents worried about the state of childhood. And trust me, it happens. 2) Bookstores. If we can’t sell it to B&N, it won’t make money, and B&N hates nudity and smoking and drinking even more than we do (probably cause they have to deal with more parents).

It has to be something really, really awesome to go against parents and bookstores.
